Our Conductor

Mr Andrew Cheung

Andrew Cheung received his B.A.(Honours) Music from the University of Western Ontario, Canada. He completed further studies (M.A. in Music) at the State University of New York at Potsdam. In Canada, he studied voice and choral conducting with Deral Johnson and at Potsdam, Brcok McElheran was his conducting mentor. Mr. Cheung was member of the Saratoga-Potsdam Choral Institute, a summer choral program operated in association with the Philadelphia Orchestra in the 70's.

After returning to Hong Kong, Mr. Cheung joined the Hong Kong Baptist University where he is currently Director of University-wide Music Activities, Director of the Academic Community Hall and conductor of the Baptist University Girls' Choir. The HKBU Girls' Choir, under his direction, made tours to many parts of Asia, Europe, Canada and U.S.A. Since 1982, he has been conductor of the Hong Kong Oratorio Society, one of the premier choruses in Hong Kong, leading them in performances of many large-scale choral works in all major venues in Hong Kong and Macau. In recent years, he has made frequent appearances with the Hong Kong Chamber Choir, the only semi-professional chorus in Hong Kong. Mr. Cheung is well known for his effective and adventurous programming, often bringing new music to audiences in the territory.

Mr. Cheung is active as a clinician; his dynamic approach to choral music has brought many invitations to conduct workshops and lectures in local schools, church choirs and institutions of higher education. He is also advisor and tutor to many university and church choirs and choral societies throughout the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. Mr. Cheung is currently Executive Secretary to the Hong Kong Association of Choral Societies.
